Jhapa tea industry is hit hard by tea workers’ indefinite protest as .almost all the factories have been shut down since last three weeks.

The tea workers have been asking to provide minimum wage fixed by the government. The government has fixed the daily wage at Rs 200. Tea workers currently get Rs 158 per day.

After the government fixed the daily wage for tea workers on August 26, 2013, tea factories had filed a writ in the Supreme Court against the government’s decision.

Although the court quashed their appeal, the tea producers have not implemented the government decision. The workers have started protest on April 5. The protest in the peak tea-plucking and harvest season has hit tea processing hard.

On Sunday, the tea workers also forced transportation halt in various parts of the district.
