Some lawmakers from Tarai Madhes districts raised the issue of sugarcane price in the Parliament today.
Asking the government to intervene and fix the price of sugarcane, lawmaker Jungi Lal Yadav said that the mill owners had told sugarcane farmers in Sarlahi district that they would not run the mill beyond April. “If the mill owners won’t operate mill after April, 40 per cent sugarcane crop would go waste in the fields leaving the sugarcane farmers in the lurch,” he said, adding that the farmers, who have planted sugarcane in 26,000 hectares of land would have no alternative, if the mill owners refused to buy their products on time.
Likewise, lawmakers Shatrughan Mahato, Sitaram Bhandari and Shail Devi also demanded that the government to intervene and resolve the problem confronting the sugarcane farmers.
