Patanjali Yogpeeth – run by Indian yoga guru Ramdev – has shown keen interest to revive Birgunj Sugar Factory.
The Yogapeeth has offered to make all the investment required to operate the factory, according to industry minister Karna Bahadur Thapa.
“The officials of Yogpeeth assured us that they won’t put any liability on Nepal government,” he said, adding that the ministry has asked them to submit detailed proposal. “The ministry will forward the proposal to the privatisation unit chaired by the finance minister.”
Patanjali Yogpeeth has also offered to facilitate sugarcane farmers by providing them tractors and sugarcane seeds, added Thapa, who recently visited the factory to discuss the issue with staff.
The government had decided to liquidate Birgunj Sugar Factory in 2003. However, Public Enterprises Direction Board has recommended the government to operate the factory on public-private-partnership model.
