Department of Passports has gone online from today to help sevice seeker get to know the status of their applications.

The passport applicants can now check their status online, director general of the department Ramesh Prasad Khanal said, adding that it will help avoid unnecessary hassles the applicants face to check whether their passport application has been already processed or not.

The department is issuing Machine Readable Passports (MRPs), according to the international commitment to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) that has asked Nepal to replace all hand-written passports issued so far by November, 2015.

The department is currently receiving MRP applications from various Nepali missions abroad and districts across the country, he said, adding that

The applicants can check the status of their passport by clicking MRP status button on the department’s official website dopmofa.gov.np.

Those applying for passports from missions abroad can also check on ‘Mission Wise’ button and applying from districts can check through ‘District Wise’ to check the status of their application.

The department is planning to include detail status of each passport application on a lot wise basis received from each district and missions abroad,” Khanal added.

The Department of Foreign Employment has already made MRP mandatory for all Nepali migrant workers. To help the move, the Department of Passports

has mobilised all the Nepali missions abroad to collect MRP applications to replace hand-written passports well before the deadline of November.

The department has already dispatched some 43,574 MRPs to 29 Nepali missions abroad after processing the applications, Khanal informed. “Likewise, some 13,297 applications are under processing and details of another 24,723 MRP applications have been already been entered into the system.”

The department is currently producing 6,000 passports everyday.
