Ministry of Commerce and Supplies has assured smooth supply and normal prices of daily consumable food items including rice, cereals, lentils, and sugar during the festivals next month.

During a meeting held at the ministry today, the related government agencies, consumer rights activists and traders also discussed on possible ways to ensure smooth supply and maintain prices during Dashain and Tihar.

The spokesperson of the ministry Dipak Subedi said that the traders have agreed the government request to not increase the price of the goods during the festivities, apart from maintaining adequate stock for at least five months.

The meeting also agreed to open subsidy shops in different places of Kathmandu city – for Dashain and Tihar – from September 17 to November 1.

Four public enterprises including Salt Trading Corporation, National Trading Limited, Dairy Development Corporation and Nepal Food Corporation will sell commodities like sugar, ghee, salt and rice at subsidised rates for festivals as usual.

Likewise, the meeting also concluded to start strict monitoring and inspection of the market and supply of essential foodstuff.
