Sugar mills today fixed price of sugarcane at Rs 476 per quintal.

The farmers have been asking the sugar mills to fix the price since six months.

However, the mills had paid Rs 481 for a quintal of sugarcane last year.

During the discussion, the mill owners had proposed to pay Rs 460 per quintal but the meeting led by chief secretary Lila Mani Poudyal today fixed Rs 476 per quintal after rounds of talks.

The mill owners had been asking the government to fix price at par with the price in Indian state of Bihar. But the government officials and members of a taskforce – that was formed to suggest sugarcane price – had been putting pressure on mills owners to set the price in favour of farmers.

Both the parties – mill owners and sugarcane farmers – had requested the government to facilitate the dialogue to fix the minimum price in February.

President of Sugar Producers’ Association Sashi Kanta Agrawal said that the mills have agreed to pay farmers the price set by the government.
