Government agencies established to sell commodities in fair price are geared up to open the fair price shops for festivals.

Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) is selling rice, wheat, bean, buckwheat and naked barley through eight fair prices shops in the Kathmandu Valley during this festive season. Likewise, National Trading, Salt Trading Corporation and Dairy Development Corporation are also selling through the seasonal outlets from September 17 for Dashian.

Nepal Food Corporation has estimated to sell 12,000 quintals rice and wheat and 100 quintals of beans, buckwheat and naked barley brought from the hilly districts.

It is also planning to sell some 3,500 he-goats during the Dashain festivalfrom September 26 from its Thapathali office, said deputy general manager of the corporation Nawaraj Upadhyay.

“We have been running fair price shops annually to discourage black marketing and usual price hikes,” he said, adding that the corporation has already acquired rice and wheat, and in the process of buying he-goats, naked barley, buckwheat and beans.

Goats will cost around 10 per cent higher than last year, he added. “The corporation also offers discounts on rice and wheat.”
