The country imports fruits worth a whopping Rs 6 billion every year, according to higher government officials.
The dependency on imports to meet domestic fruits’ demand is increasing due to lack of government policy to substitute imports.
India is the major supplier of fruits for Nepal. Almost 75 per cent of the country’s total fruit imports come from India.
Secretary of the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Krishna Hari Baskota during a visit to Balkhu fruits market today directed traders to supply fresh fruits at reasonable rates.
he also urged traders and the management committee of the Balkhu market to ensure smooth supply of fruits in the market.
Balkhu fruits market is the leading supplier of fruits to the Kathmandu Valley. It has more than 250 fruits wholesalers. The market posts transaction of more than Rs 7 million daily.
